چکیده

Laboratory experiments are used to study the voluntary provision of a pure public good in the presence of an anonymous external donor. The external funds are used in two different settings, lump-sum matching and one-to-one matching, to examine how allocations to the public good are affected. The experimental results reveal that allocations to the public good under lumpsum matching are significantly higher, and have significantly lower within-group dispersion, relative to one-to-one matching and a baseline setting without external matching funds. *Research support from the Indiana University Center on Philanthropy is gratefully acknowledged.

Group size and the voluntary provision of public goods Experimental evidence utilizing large groups

New experimental evidence extending the investigation of free-riding behavior in public goods provision is presented. Procedures are developed to deal with the logistical problems inherent in experiments involving many subjects. Data from Voluntary Contribution Mechanism experiments are reported utilizing group sizes of 4, 10, 40 and 100. These experiments provide replicable results that contra...

Center for Research on Economic and Social Theory Research Seminar in Quantitative Economics

We consider a model of the non-cooperative provision of a public good. We show that there will in general exist a unique Nash equilibrium. The equilibrium provision of the public good will be independent of certain kinds of redistributions of wealth among the set of agents who are actually contributing to the public good, but will depend in general on the composition of the contributing set of ...

The Effects of Framing, Risk, and Uncertainty on Contributions toward a Public Account: Experimental Evidence

This paper uses laboratory evidence from four strategically equivalent voluntary contribution games to evaluate differences in contributions toward a public account due to framing, risk, and uncertainty. I test four hypotheses. (1) Individuals contribute more to a public account when the dilemma is framed as the mitigation of a public loss than the provision of a public good. (2) Individuals co...

Voluntary provision of threshold public goods with continuous contributions : experimental evidence

This paper examines experimentally the effects of allowing individuals to contribute any desired proportion of their endowments toward a threshold public good. Permitting continuous rather than binary ‘‘all-or-nothing’’ contributions significantly increases contributions and facilitates provision. A money-back guarantee further encourages provision, especially when the threshold is high. A high...

An Exploration of the Robustness of Alternative Laboratory Methodologies: Matching Funds and the Provision of Public Goods

The voluntary provision of a pure public good is studied in the presence of an anonymous external donor. New data generated using experimental procedures employing both extra-credit and cash incentives, as well as asynchronous access to real-time decision rounds lasting several days, are compared to previous data generated using traditional cash-only, synchronous-access laboratory procedures. T...
